websites i dislike
here are some websites/apps i dislike and do not use:
| website | reason | instead |
|---|---|---|
| wikipedia | biased, citations missing frequently, relying on bias data, politicized |
dictionaries, research papers, trusted journalists |
| gmail | ads in my inbox, zero security, ugly design, mega corp, had an incident with my google photo library where i got the message that my photo contains something illegal (used google photos back in the day), it was maybe 8 years ago? anyway that freaked me out. also i had nothing illegal there | fastmail |
| google search | see above, it is by google, but also the quality of the search results is very bad | kagi |
| forgot my username, lots of bots, looks bloated now | status.cafe (lol) | |
| owned by meta, same mega corp that feeds off of my data. why would i willingly choose to give any of my info to zuck if i can use alternatives, or text messages? i think meta is comically evil, have you heard about how they are tracking what their devs are doing to train the AI? including keyboard strokes and everyhing | telegram, element | |
| ads, everything looks too polished, also it is not fun. it feels old and dead in some way | - | |
| spotify | quit when they introduced ai dj, also a lot of artists are like are not there. and i believe in supporting the artists and buying their music, not paying them pennies for streaming. i realize artists care about how many streams their songs have, so maybe i am not being caring towards that in that way, but i hope the money they make off of my purchases make up for it somehow. | mp3 player |
the one website that is bias, bloated, full of ads, and radicalizing that i do use is youtube, i just do not think that there is alternative just because of the volume of content there. also it feels like a crime to say this on such a calm and indie website, but i also like tiktok. in these two cases, the good outweighs the evil for me.
